Every experience with Rio Leon Tours is 100% private and exclusively yours. We do not mix groups or run rigid, crowded itineraries. Whether you are a solo traveler seeking quiet observation, a couple on a honeymoon, or a family, the boat, the crew, and the pace of the day are dedicated entirely to you.

We offer flexible departures to make your day as seamless as possible. We typically depart from the municipal dock in Golfito or from Puerto Jiménez.

We operate a comfortable, locally designed boat perfectly suited for the calm waters of the fjord. Our boat features a canopy that provides ample shade from the tropical sun, comfortable seating, and an open layout that allows for easy, 360-degree wildlife viewing and photography.

Because our boats are designed for intimate, shallow-water exploration and gliding quietly through mangroves, they do not feature an onboard bathroom. When nature calls, we keep it wild and authentic—a quick, refreshing dip in the ocean is the way to go! It is all part of the raw, unfiltered adventure of exploring a tropical fjord.

Depending on where your Costa Rica journey begins, here are the most efficient routes to reach us in the south:

From San José, Alajuela, or Heredia (The Central Valley): The most seamless option is taking a 50-minute domestic flight from San José (SJO) directly to Golfito or Puerto Jiménez via Sansa or Green Airways. If driving, take Route 27 out of the Central Valley, connect to Route 34 (The Costanera Sur) moving past Uvita, and continue south. The total drive time is roughly 5.5 to 6 hours on fully paved roads.

From Guanacaste (Liberia, Tamarindo, Nosara): Driving directly from the far northwest down to the deep south is a massive 8 to 10-hour road trip. We highly recommend driving or taking a local flight back to San José (SJO), then boarding a quick connecting flight down to the gulf. If you do choose to drive, take Route 1 south to Route 23, merge onto Route 27, and take Route 34 all the way down the Pacific coast.

We recommend dedicating 3 to 5 days to fully experience the region. This gives you ample time to enjoy a dedicated whale or dolphin safari, explore the deep mangrove channels on a high-tide tour, and spend a relaxed afternoon beach hopping without feeling rushed by the tropical weather patterns.

Yes. Both Golfito (on the east side of the gulf) and Puerto Jiménez (on the west side) are fully developed local hub towns. You will find multiple banks with 24/7 ATMs, fully stocked modern supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations, and medical clinics. However, because many of the high-end eco-lodges situated along the remote shorelines of the gulf are isolated and accessible only by boat, we always advise withdrawing local currency (Colones) and grabbing any specific personal necessities before boarding your boat transfer.

The gulf is beautiful year-round, but the seasons offer different experiences. The dry season provides the best underwater visibility for snorkeling and longer days for our culinary beach experiences. The rainy season brings a lush, vibrant energy to the jungle and marks the arrival of humpback whales, though snorkeling conditions can be slightly more challenging. We embrace both—it’s just a different kind of beauty.

We respect the ocean. If the sea conditions are unsafe or the weather simply won't allow for a good experience, we will work with you to reschedule your charter. If your travel itinerary does not allow for a new date, we will fully refund your deposit.

Our standard half-day charter includes your private boat, a professional local captain, a bilingual guide, fresh water, local fruit snacks, and all necessary gear, including snorkeling masks and wildlife identification guides.

Absolutely. We offer incredible farm-to-coast gastronomic upgrades crafted by our private chef using ingredients from our own organic permaculture farm. Because these are highly curated, our premium Luxury Gastronomic Experience requires a minimum of two weeks' notice, while our other culinary setups require at least one week's notice.
